"When I was a kid, patterned wallpaper was all the rage. Every room in our house was papered in a different theme. I loved tracing the intricate wallpaper patterns with my fingers. I was a bit of a dreamer, and it was easy to get lost in the labyrinthine patterns. My most recent series is done on damask paper with vintage wallpaper patterns printed on it. I incorporate the stylized, repetitive patterns into the painted image to add visual depth and texture. In some pieces, such as “Autumn Glory,” large swaths of paper are left exposed and incorporated into the landscape, in this case forming bark patterns on the limbs. In other works, such as “Blazing Hills,” only a thin slice of paper is left unpainted, forming a green edge along the riverbank. A hint of damask also remains barely visible underneath the opaque sky. For viewers, looking for the damask patterns becomes a fun part of experiencing the art."—Marcia Crumley
Expressive Landscapes
"My interest lies in creating expressive landscapes that capture the spirit and mood of a place. The mountains and lakes of Maine and memories of my travels are consistent sources of inspiration. But faithfully reproducing a specific location or exact color is not as important to me as evoking an emotional response in the viewer. While I’m an avid photographer and take many reference photos, when I paint a scene I freely change the light, color and physical layout to heighten the mood and create color tension. In the end, it all boils down to my love of color, and of nature, and the pure joy I get from sharing this in paint, pastels or inks."
