Finding beauty and comfort in the melancholic, elevating the mundane, capturing a split-second of life and taking the time to really look at it, all figure heavily in Yelland's work. Reflections and shadows go beyond the canvas itself widening the scope of view. They, along with a dramatic light, are often the characters in the play, hinting at narratives but never giving too much away. The stage is set for individual interpretation, though they often reflect real moments in the artist’s life. They subconsciously and consciously mirror things that are happening during the time it takes to paint them. That being said, there are universal themes that run through the work that many people can relate to on different levels.
