I grew up catching toads, building fairy houses, and roaming the woods of Chatham, NY. My outdoorsy upbringing was influenced by my mother, a bio-chem major turned non-fiction children’s author and environmental educator; always encouraging me to explore under rocks and search out salamanders. I found my first animal skull on the front lawn. It was a broken muskrat skull and I was utterly amazed that this treasure was once inside of a creature.
Biology class dissections and microscope investigations inspired my fascination with the patterns that lie beneath our skin. Pieces of our bones meld together like perfect fitting puzzle pieces. Fractal patterns of capillaries transport blood to exactly the right places at exactly the right time. It’s all so beautiful.
My work in cut paper began with a college printmaking assignment. To add dimension to a screen-printed primate skull piece, I cut it apart and layered it back together. Later, I found that by suspending my paper pieces, I could experiment with the shadows that they cast.
I draw inspiration from medical drawings, animal skull and bone samples, and architectural remains. Peeling back exteriors show that, in the end, we all have the same foundations.
