In my work I am drawn to evocative images that represent humans or moments as both vulnerable and fleeting. The images that draw me might be of a single person against a stark background or a vintage photograph evoking a stray moment from the past. When I paint people I often choose women or children in fronton poses. I enjoy the energy and contrast of an image in space. When successful, a beautiful tension is created from the composition in combination with an expression of surprise, the parting of lips, or a look in the eyes. The experience I hope to evoke from the observer is a sense of curiosity about the narrative of my work, while allowing the viewer to reflect upon their personal experience.
I was raised in Nebraska, after college with the desire to know life and experience beyond the plains, I moved to Europe/Paris, Minneapolis, New York and Portland OR. I have a background in drawing and illustration and began painting almost 15 years ago when my children were young. As they’ve grown, with time and practice so has my ability and style. I am now living in Portland, OR with my family and various animals, two dogs and a cat. My studio is in the back of my house with a tiny yard and garden just outside so I can hear the birds and my little fountain while I work.
